Once More with Meaning originally stems from a theatre performance at Bury College's Beacon Theatre which aimed to introduce young people to contemporary performance poetry and the night went so well we turned it into an open mic. The event takes place at The Met, Bury's premier theatre, and is accessed through its neighbouring restaurant, The @utomatic. Since The Met's door are shut on Sunday's, the room is ONLY accessible through The @utomatic. It begins at 7:30 and doors at £2 or £1 concession. The venue is spacious, with dedicated stage and audience areas for maximum enjoyment, and there is access to the bar at The @utomatic. The night is hosted by Charlotte Henson, whose website can be found here. Once More With Meaning is on the first Sunday of every month.
The night is one of two halves - in the first half open mikers may read one poem (two if they're short) and the first half is wrapped up by the first guest, who has fifteen minutes. The first half is special as the audience may vote for their favourite open mic poet. The poet who receives the most votes will be published on the Once More With Meaning blog. Between the two halves of the night is a ten minute interval for everyone to chat, register their votes, mill around a bit, grab a drink and prepare for the second half, before we recommence. All previous open mikers get a second go and the last half is, again, wrapped up by a fifteen minute guest slot.
